Fashion Faux Pas and the Big Boned Girl

One of my favorite things about girls clothes is the seemingly endless variety of styles, fabrics, colors and cuts available. Guys don't have as many options. But with so many choices, there also seems to be a much larger set of rules as to what can be worn together. I currently have two shoe options for my wedding dress. I feel like I need to make this decision before I order my custom dress because I won't have a lot of options after the dress is made.

I am 6' 4", which in the guy world puts me into a size 13 mens shoe. This is fine because that seems to be the upper limit of shoes that are normally in stock, I can almost always find something in my size. In women's world I am a size 15 and this is a bad thing. All I can seem to find is fetish wear shoes in black red or white patent with 4 inch or higher heels. I would just like a few more options. Occasionally, I am able to find something cute but it is a rare find and I can't hope to find something o wear for the wedding after the dress is made.

My sizing problem goes beyond just shoe sizes and into all women's clothing. I can wear a size 16 skirt, although they tend to be a little shorter than most women's hems. But I rarely fit into a size 16 dress. If I buy plus size dresses the tops will fit but I have too much room in the hips and waist. So it is really quite a challenge to find clothes that fit well. My girlfriend calls me a "big boned" girl, which doesn't mean I am overweight I simply have unique needs compared to the traditional girl sizes. This is the main reason I am having a wedding dress made instead of shopping off the rack.

Back to the issue at hand. While I will continue to shop around if something should come along, I will be going forward assuming I have to pick between the two shoes I have in hand. My first option is a white satin wedding shoe I bought for my Halloween Bride costume. It has a low heel, a single diagonal strap and a closed toe. Option two is a strappy sandal in Ivory. It again has a low heel but requires a satin ribbon wrapped around the ankle and lower leg to hold the shoe on. There is a rhinestone accent that attaches the ribbon to the shoe that digs in a little bit but I think I can work something out to make it more comfortable to wear.

Each shoe has its good and bad points. I like the sandal because I can get a pedicure before the wedding and show off my toes. My concern with the sandal is that I really want to wear stockings too. Which, for one, may just cover up my toes anyways and it also might look tacky wearing stockings with sandals. I like the satin shoe because I know they are comfortable. I wore them for six hours during the Halloween Party. The problem is they are white. For my dress I was planning on something Off White or Ivory. I could dye the shoes to match but I won't be able to shoes off my toes either.

My girlfriend likes the sandals, and I get that, they are super cute. But she really doesn't like the idea of stocking and sandals. She is a little more fashion averse to that idea. She thinks I dress a little too trashy anyways, I always wear stockings and a garter belt when I dress, but there is a practical reason too. It all goes back to me being a "big boned" girl.

Pantyhose really don't work for me, as I said before I am 6'4". They always end up pulling down over my hips and I end up with saggy crotch, which is never attractive...or comfortable. Even if I get something in a Queen size they still aren't made for a long legged girl like me. I have found a lovely stocking that comes in a Q2 size for taller girls by Berkshire hosiery. They probably have them in a pantyhose too but, I am a little trashy so I will always chose stockings over pantyhose. To thine own self be true.

So that is what I am going through on my shoe decision. I recently hear about a toeless stocking, so I will be researching those in a little while and I will keep an eye out for a nice new wedding shoe. In the mean time, I will keep planning for my dream wedding.

  1. I can relate to the big feet thing, but you may be able to squeeze into a woman's size 13, I know I can (I wear a men's 13).

Have you tried taking the clothes to a tailor? They always suggest this on the show What Not To Wear and it seems to be good advice. Of course, the tailor would have to be open-minded ;)
